Here at My Sensitive Baby, we like to showcase inspiring women who strive to make a difference in the lives of other mums and bubs.
Today we’re so stoked to have Vana Borcich, the mum-in-charge and founder of BabyScent Natural Skincare.
Tell us about yourself.
A little about me… hmmm… I can see this is really going to be putting me in the spotlight hahaha! And oh, dear I hope you got time.
I guess I will begin by mentioning my background; I was originally born in Argentina, so yes, “Latina”. Some might see that as being hot blooded! But I prefer to see myself more as being Passionate.
Passionate about my son, passionate about what I do through BabyScent, passionate about life. I might have been born there, but I have lived here for 20 years – so I call Australia my home. I am proud to say I eat Vegemite EVERYDAY! So I think I have earned my True Blue Stripes, don’t you?
I love learning! About anything and everything! I think if my former teachers read this they would be in shock because back then I had very little interest… Strange how things can change. Now I attend every course that time allows, love reading business books, aromatherapy books, research on the net, online classes. It’s fascinating and I really enjoy it. I think if I can learn at least one thing new – Brilliant!
I graduated with a Masters in Visual Communication Design working for most of my career life in Aerospace – yes, completely unrelated to skincare! Nevertheless it has come extremely handy as I am also the creator of all our visuals, marketing, props, displays, packaging, brochures, art work, signs, photographs, designs, logo, you name it. This baby is my complete creation! But like with building airplanes there is no real room for tolerances, that is the same approach I have taken with the development of the brand and products. I like everything being as close to perfect as possible. In other words, I am my own biggest critic.
I like to see myself as a very caring person more so since becoming a proud mother, blessed with the only son I have, Kyle. I have to admit he is the apple of my eye. He has been the force behind what drives me to better myself. I enjoy every minute of motherhood which has taught me to also be selfless. Thanks to him both my life, and shortly after my career, changed forever as he was the inspiration behind it all, the reason BabyScent exists.
What does a typical day look like for you?
In the morning is your typical school run and being a mum. The minute I drop Kyle off and get back to my home office it’s a case of : “Your time starts NOW!” kind of thing. You never quite know if it will go according to schedule!
In general it will entail answering numerous emails, looking at the to do list which can go from meetings to sorting out paperwork, to production of products, to sourcing raw ingredients, social media and more. A spectrum of areas of the business that I never knew existed until I began this almost 12 years ago!
Oh and did I mention hang out the washing in between until you finally get literally a 5 minute break to drink your unfinished coffee (by now ice coffee) from earlier, that you keep forgetting to drink because your head is in so many places?
So then by around lunchtime the packing of orders begins, allowing ourselves to pack the last parcel by 3:10pm as a cut-off before school pickup and then making our way to the post office to send all the goodies out; lucky me Kyle now has the muscles to help carry all the boxes of satchels! He can almost be considered as part of the Team.
The day is not over then, working from home normally means there is no clocking out as there are always tasks to be taken care of. I can’t recount the many nights I have finished at 1am (or 3am!) because you were on a roll or got your second wind or because you actually managed to get more done as it is the quietest time with zero interruptions from all the craziness you tend to get throughout the day!
Yes, you said it BU-SY!
When did you know you wanted to start your own business?
I will keep this one short… The minute I realised and started seeing the amazing results we had with Kyle’s skin with our products. It was something I had to share. This began with friends and friends of friends that we had given pots to try and everyone experiencing the same results. It was a no-brainer.
What’s the biggest thing you’ve learnt this year?
Ask for Help. As much as I struggle with it as I have always been a very independent self-reliant person I am slowly learning to ask for help.
What’s the best bit of feedback you’ve ever had?
Every time I get feedback from a customer stating how much our products have helped them and how the products have changed their lives and that we are making a difference…Very humbling.
What’s your proudest moment?
There are several moments and all for very different reasons… The birth of my son, Kyle; and becoming a mother.
The day I decided to go forward with this business despite the unknown.
Becoming one of the Finalists in the Business Awards for our region.
What’s your most memorable facepalm moment?
I am embarrassed to admit it, as by now you now know a little bit more about me…When I received the first lot of labels of the new artwork I had sent to print and noticed something odd about it but I could not put my finger on it… until I realised OMG, I had forgotten to put the Business Logo on them!
What’s your number one way to wind down?
You would think it would be using our products and have a pampering session, wouldn’t you?
However as crazy as it sounds I love getting in the lab when it is all quiet lat at night and listen to all inspirational audios while making product. I find it therapeutic yet empowering in a strange yet very positive way. It helps me stay focused on the difference we are trying to make in other peoples lives, gives me the strength to keep going (moving forwards and upwards which is reflected in the concept of our logo).
Who inspires you the most?
My biggest inspiration would have to be our customers, in particular the ones that suffer from skin conditions (eczema, psoriasis, rosacea, and the array of dermatitis) that are in need of a major relief from these skin irritations! They really touch my core as I can relate with their struggles having experienced what they are going through with my son when he had severe eczema as a baby.
What do you love most about running your own business?
Running your own business is not always smooth sailing with many challenges and obstacles; however, those are the same reasons why I love what I do, plus so many more! They have helped me grow and discover things about myself that I never imagined I would be doing or that I was capable of. It has made me stronger and somewhat wiser, I guess. It has given me the joy to help others and in some kind of way make a difference.
Being your own boss has meant that I am able to be at home for my son when he is sick and pick him up and drop him off to school; or that I am able to go watch him during school activities – all the little things we tend to take for granted but that are so very important. It has allowed me to have the flexibility to be there for him, or even have a sleep in if I want to!
Coffee or tea?
Actually Both! Coffee in the morning is a MUST, yet I love a variety of teas throughout the day most days, especially in winter. I have acquired a wide range of herbal teas from all different small businesses.
ABOUT YOUR BUSINESS. What do you do? Who for? How does it benefit them?
To answer these three questions I supposed I better really do them all in one, as they really are all part of my story:
After experiencing the benefits of our creation, BabyScent was born. Designed and developed to cater for Mother and Baby’s natural skincare needs, our range has expanded to include the entire family’s well-being.
It all began from the desperation and devotion I had towards my baby son, Kyle, in the quest to soothe the pain caused by his severe eczema. With this in mind and unable to heal his ailment with existing products in the market, I created this nourishing natural skincare range, finding my determination to research all natural ingredients and remedies to find that much needed relief his delicate skin required.
Almost twelve years into this Australian Made & Owned family business, I continue to help others with similar conditions like dermatitis and psoriasis with these healthy and eco-friendly products that are now ideal for the entire family.
I first began with the main 3 products which are the core of the business (Multipurpose Cream to help manage eczema, the Moisturising Cream to help nourish the skin, and the Gentle Shampoo & Body Wash which soothes the skin).
To achieve this, the range was and still is made from a nourishing and lush blends of carefully selected natural & certified organic ingredients of the highest quality, mainly sourced from Australia. Some of our favourite being the soothing Aloe Vera gel, the richness of the coconut oil, the healing calendula and rosehip oils, the freshness of green tea extracts.
Every concoction is mindfully mixed and blended with care; designed to soothe and care for the most delicate types of skin, whilst being practical for their multiple uses that each product offers, consciously sustainable, as only recyclable packaging is used and kind to the environment and cruelty free as we do not tested on animals.
Our products are not only beneficial for those that prefer a natural alternative but also deliciously healthy, capturing the most discerning of customers, but also for the most sensitive and delicate of skins; particularly suitable for babies & children; as well as eczema & psoriasis sufferers and those with allergies and skin irritations.
Lastly, where can we find you?
